Poster Title
A CORKA of a Collaboration

Objective of the Poster

To illustrate ‘A CORKA of a Collaboration’ which relates to the innovatively collaborative model of practice devised by the research teams at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust in order to successfully deliver the CORKA Study: COmmunity based Rehabilitation after Knee Arthroplasty: A prospective individually randomised controlled trial. Participants were randomised to receive either home-based rehabilitation (intervention arm) or usual care (physiotherapy delivered locally in the outpatient department) to determine the difference in outcome for people undergoing knee arthroplasty (knee replacement).

The poster illustrates the complexities of the trial journey and clinical pathway facilitated by Dorset HealthCare University Foundation Trust and Dorset County Hospital NHS foundation Trusts’ research teams, outlining many of the facets of the collaborative process, the challenges associated and the solutions developed.

The poster demonstrates the successful collaboration of two individual research teams geographically situated 30 miles apart, two NHS Trusts, one based in the community and the other in hospital. The poster also provides an insight into the huge geographical area covered to facilitate the intervention to the patient population participating in the study, across rural Dorset. The success of the collaboration was recognised by the Clinical Research Network Wessex with the CORKA Team being awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award.

A number of lessons were learnt to improve future collaborative opportunities, these are outlined in the poster and provide an overview for healthcare professionals considering working collaboratively.
