Dr Sarah Williams
Job Title: Associate Director of Research & Improvement
Sarah has a background in public health, spending the early part of her career working with Marie Stopes International, UNICEF and UNDP in Kenya and Belize on population health programmes. She joined Solent in 2010 as it formed as a new Trust, and now leads an integrated team driving research, quality improvement, clinical effectiveness and the measurement of clinical outcomes. Over the past seven years, she and her team have built a thriving research and improvement culture embedded in clinical services, delivering portfolio studies but also leading on work to build an evidence base for community, out of hospital care. Sarah is determined to make research accessible to patients, families and staff and useful on the front line, and leads on many of the streams for patient and community involvement across the Trust. She set up one of the first patient involvement groups for research in Wessex, a group that has gone on to win multiple awards. She has also championed a range of roles to link research with clinical care. The Clinical Academic pathway is now integrated with the Trust Nursing and AHP Career framework and there are a number of active Investigators across the Trust. The approach was highlighted by the CQC in 2016 as an area of outstanding practice with clear impact on patient outcomes, and Solent is currently listed as one of the most research active Care Trust in the NIHR league tables. Sarah has set up and leads the new Solent Academy of Research and Improvement, is co-chair of the R&D Forum Strategy and Leadership Working Group, a member of the Healthcare Leadership in Research Organisation and Chair of the Wessex Research Leadership Group. .
