Dr William Van’t Hoff
Job Title: Clinical Director for NHS Engagement
William is a Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist at Great Ormond Street NHS Foundation Hospital, London where he is also Director of the NIHR Clinical Research Facility. He trained at Guy’s Hospital, London, with an early interest in Medicines and Pharmacology leading to an intercalated BSc. After paediatric training posts in Birmingham, London and Oxford, he completed an MD in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a new treatment for a rare genetic renal disorder, cystinosis. In further MRC-funded work, he led the identification of the molecular genetic basis of the disorder.
His interest in paediatric medicines enabled him to lead a local and later co-lead the national NIHR Medicines for Children Research Network and then Chair the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Medicines Committee. In 2016, he took up a half-time role as NIHR Clinical Director for NHS Engagement, tasked with helping the NHS recognise the importance of research in improving health.
