Job Title: Head of Research & Innovation, Pre-Hospital Emergency Research Unit
Organisation: Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust


Nigel is Head of Research and Innovation for the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust (WAST), and leads the Pre Hospital Emergency Research Unit. He is a Paramedic, and has worked in the UK Emergency Ambulance Service since 1989. Nigel is the Wales Principle Investigator for several portfolio studies including the PARAMEDIC 2 Trial exploring the role of Adrenalin in Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest, which is the largest resuscitation drug Trial to have been conducted in Europe. Nigel is also Chief Investigator on the TIER Trial exploring paramedic referral of TIA to specialist clinic, and RAPID Trial investigating paramedic initiated FICB (a regional nerve block) in hip fracture.

Nigel’s research interests includes Pre Hospital and Emergency care of Health Failure, Self Harm, and role expansion for allied Health professionals. His is published widely and presents on many local, national and international conferences. He has contributed to NIHR themed reviews of Research for Ambulance Services, and Stroke. Nigel contributes to many bodies, including being editorial board member for the British Paramedic Journal, the Journal of Paramedic Practice, and peer reviewer for several journals, the National Institute of Health Research, and is a member of the Wales Technology Advisory Board


Nigel was awarded the Queens Ambulance Medal in the 2017 New Years honours list distinguished or meritorious service.
